Many women who have had a C section may have concerns about another pregnancy. While there are some complications that have been noted in a second pregnancy after C section, the instances are rare. It is recommended that the mother wait 18-23 months after giving birth before conceiving again to give the body time to recover and rest.
One thing that you do not have to worry about is the scar opening from the first C-section, it is healed within a few months and is very strong, much stronger than was originally thought.
Many women go on to have an uneventful pregnancy for their second pregnancy after c section. While some do require a second c-section, others are able to have a vaginal birth. Whether to try for a natural vaginal birth is something that the mother-to-be and her doctor should discuss.
While in the past it was thought that if a mother had one c-section, she would never be able to have a vaginal delivery, this thinking has been found to be incorrect. It was also once thought that a woman who had a cesarean would only be able to have two children. Again this information was found to be wrong as well.
The determination on whether or not you will have a second C-section can be decided by comparing the first and second pregnancy. If the same issues exist in the second, then it will be necessary, such as a breech birth, large baby or any other medical reason that existed with your first child that still exists today. However, if the reason was something that no longer exists you can often try to have a vaginal birth, which is often referred to as a VBAC by those in the medical profession.
One of the most important considerations for a second pregnancy after C section is the mother’s feelings. It may have been a scary and traumatic experience for her the first time and she may feel frightened and unsure about a second baby.
An obstetrician or midwife that is trusted, caring and easy to talk to can be a big help for the mother and the father too. Parents-to-be should feel free to discuss their concerns and ask any questions they may have. A doctor should be patient and provide all the answers that are needed for the parents to make an informed decision about whether or not to try for another baby.
The parents-to-be and doctor can and should work together to ensure that the mother receives the best possible care. This care should start before conception and continue throughout the pregnancy. The doctor can advise you on any risks,or potential complications to watch for.
A second pregnancy after C section is not something to be afraid or something that should be avoided. If you truly want another child and the doctor has no medical reasons for you to not go through with it, let your heart be your guide. You will know what is best for you and your family.
