Differences Between First And Second Pregnancy

A lot of expectant mothers for the second time around tend to think that the second pregnancy is similar to the first one. They could not be any more mistaken because apart from the physical differences between both pregnancies, there are also emotional differences that these mothers need to contend with. Because of the differences between first and second pregnancy, second time mothers need to know what these are, so they can be better prepared to deal with these differences.

The most obvious differences are the physical ones. For starters, most second time mothers tend to have less frequent episodes of morning sickness, although this differs on a case to case basis. If you are a second time mother-to-be, you may also get tired easily this time, and your pelvic joints might hurt more. Because of all these complications, you need to be much more careful when it comes to your posture, and you need to lie on your side when you sleep.

In addition, your belly may enlarge faster and the bump might start to show much earlier compared to the first pregnancy. Sometimes, a second pregnancy becomes obvious even before the sixth month, for it may manifest as early as the seventh to the tenth week. The only good thing to expect from your second pregnancy is that the muscles in your uterine wall are more flexible now, since it has already undergone expansion during the first pregnancy.

Another important thing that you need to remember about differences between first and second pregnancy is the emotional complications that are distinct between both. The second time expectant mothers are often not as preoccupied with their pregnancy compared to the first one. This is because obviously, they would have to look after their first child, who might already be a toddler or a pre-schooler during the second pregnancy.

But sometimes, second time mothers tend to feel guilty because they think that they are not as caring to the unborn baby compared to when they had their first born. Other emotional complications include sporadic guilt pangs that may arise from their incapacity to spend as much time with their husbands and first kid during the second pregnancy. If you are a second time mother and you feel that you are neglecting your older child, you need to get rid of that thought and just consider that as an opportunity for your first child to try to be less dependent on you.

These are some of the differences between first and second pregnancy, and even when you think the differences are not that significant, still, you need to know what these differences are. Mothers in general tend to assume that every pregnancy is the same, but given the differences in their physical and emotional states, it would be wise for them to brace themselves for the physical and emotional discrepancies, so they can prepare in advance, and try to readjust their expectations for the new experience. Doing so can not only help them deal with a second pregnancy much better, but this can even help appease them when they feel that they are not doing a good job with their second pregnancy.
